74% of SMBs use AI — but 78% won't let it work unsupervised

Published on 23 July 2026

If you're still hesitating to bring artificial intelligence into your business, one figure should reassure you on two fronts at once: you're neither behind, nor alone in being wary. A recent survey makes it clear: AI adoption among SMBs is now mainstream, yet very few owners are willing to let it work without supervision.

First, the source — and its scope

The figures below come from a single survey: Bluevine's 2026 Business Owner Success Survey, conducted by Centiment among 942 U.S. SMB owners, April 7–9, 2026 (margin of error about ±3%). It's solid data, but American — read it as a broad trend, not a numerical portrait of Québec. We come back to that below. Other outlets' coverage of this survey reports on the same study, not independent data.

Adoption has become the norm

According to the survey, 74% of SMB owners use or test AI tools, and 33% use them regularly across multiple areas of their business. On tools, ChatGPT leads at 57%, followed by Google Gemini at 56%, Microsoft Copilot at 30% and Claude at 12% — the last being, again per the survey, the fastest-growing tool among Bluevine customers (up 729% year over year).

And it pays off: 52% of respondents report positive ROI from their AI use, and 48% save at least four hours a week. The most common use cases are data analysis (39%), marketing and sales (37%), operations automation (29%), customer service (27%) and financial management (23%).

But trust stays under watch

Here's the most telling figure: 78% of owners do not fully trust AI to handle routine tasks without human oversight. The main barriers are data security (33%, up from 23% in 2025), distrust of AI's accuracy (31%) and cost (24%).

In other words, SMB owners have landed on the right instinct: use AI, yes, but with a human keeping a hand on the wheel. That's exactly the right posture — and it's ours too. AI without a safety net is the risk; supervised AI is the lever.

And in Québec?

Worth repeating: these numbers describe the U.S. market. We shouldn't take them for a local portrait. For a Québec and Canadian read, bodies like BDC, the CFIB and Statistics Canada publish their own tracking of SMB technology adoption — sources to prefer for placing your business in its true context. The underlying trend is likely shared, though: AI is spreading, and so is caution toward unsupervised automation.

What the U.S. survey mostly confirms is an intuition many local owners already share: AI is useful, but it shouldn't be left unwatched.

What it means for your business

  • You're not behind. Three-quarters of SMBs are already using AI, at least in testing. The train hasn't left.

  • Your wariness is healthy — and shared. Not wanting to leave AI alone at the controls isn't outdated hesitation; it's the majority reflex.

  • The answer isn't "all or nothing." It's AI with a human safety net — a system designed so someone keeps control over what matters.

At yeevy, that's precisely what we build: useful automation, in French, designed by seasoned software architects, with a human in the right places. The goal isn't to replace your judgment, but to free you from repetitive tasks without ever making you lose control.
